Brown says he must meet the Secretary of State.
“Funding a cleanup not yet promised” he says
Gordon Brown who welcomed the fact that the Parliamentary Undersecretary of State for Defence had taken the time to come to Dalgety Bay to meet with local groups including the Community Council and Sailing Club has repeated his request for a meeting with the Defence Secretary to agree what has not been agreed today … that they will fund a remediation action plan for the area.
Mr Brown warned that action must be taken to avoid the area being designated by SEPA as contaminated and said such a move would be ‘disastrous’ for the Fife community.
He said; “The Minister will now know the strength of feeling and concern within the local community.
“While I welcome regular monitoring, the issues of concern go beyond monitoring and now include the funding of a cleanup plan.
First, the MOD must accept liability for the remedial action that is required to make this site safe and secure in the long term.
Second, the MOD must work with SEPA come up with a remediation plan setting out clear timescales for the work to be carried out”.
“I am concerned that the language being used today by the Minister suggests that the MOD involvement is purely on a voluntary basis. I want to make clear that the MOD have a responsibility for this situation and I am clear that they have duty to take whatever steps are necessary to make the area safe and secure”.
