A Labour candidate for Fife Council who is standing in Burntisland in this year’s elections says dog fouling is a blight on the town.
Peter George who hopes to represent the Burntisland, Kinghorn and Western Kirkcaldy ward says such is the level of concern in the community that people regularly stop him in the street to ask what’s being done about it.
He’s calling for a crackdown on dog owners who fail to take responsibility for cleaning up after their pets.
Peter said: “Most dog owners in Burntisland do the right thing and dispose of dog mess responsibly, but there is a minority that don’t and it has become a blight on the town.
“It’s an issue in every area, from the High Street to the housing schemes on the edge of town. And the Links is just terrible for it. When I’m out and about in Burntisland, people constantly stop me to ask what’s being done about the problem.
“The council used to provide over one million biodegradable bags every year to encourage dog owners to clean up after their pets, but that service was withdrawn. And we’d like to see more of Fife Council’s dog wardens but there’s only four covering the Kingdom now so it is difficult for them.
“If I’m elected to Fife Council I’ll certainly push for more resources to tackle this problem but I think we need to create a culture where it’s completely unacceptable for dog owners not to clean up after their pets.
“I would like people in Burntisland to challenge the irresponsible dog owners who have created this problem. If the vast majority of decent people in this community stand together, we have a chance of dealing with dog fouling once and for all.”
